Why chiropractic?

Our population is getting older. As we age, we become more prone to disease, illness, & injury. Too often, we are turning to prescription medication to provide a quick fix. The Canadian Institute for Health Information reported that 66% of seniors were prescribed 5 or more different drug classes in 2016. Almost a third of seniors were prescribed 10 or more while more than 8% were prescribed 15 or more!*

What makes us unique?

At M Chiropractic, we have over 20 years of experience treating patients throughout the lower mainland.  Over that time, we have helped thousands of patients regain their health and recover from neck or back pain.

What makes us unique is that in addition to the traditional hands-on Chiropractic Manipulation (Diversified Technique), our doctors also employ a softer technique called Activator Methods Chiropractic Technique (AM).  AM allows the Chiropractor to use an instrument to deliver the adjustments to the spine instead of using his or her hands to apply the thrust. Some patients respond better to instrument adjusting versus hands-on adjusting.  Our experienced doctors can determine this.

Along with hands-on and instrument adjusting, we also use Flexion - Distraction.  This technique is especially effective for low back pain, disc pain, and sciatica.

Activator Methods Chiropractic Technique

Activator Methods uses a small, hand-held instrument called the Activator Adjusting Instrument to deliver a gentle impulse force to the spine with the goal of restoring motion to the targeted spinal vertebral joint.  It is an alternative to the traditional manual form of spinal manipulation. Next to the Diversified technique, Activator Methods is the most common therapeutic intervention used by chiropractors.

How exactly does it work?  There are specific protocols to detect spinal joint dysfunction, analyze leg length inequality, identify issues with body mechanics and test neurological reflexes.  A spring-loaded, hand-held mechanical device called the Activator Adjusting Instrument provides a quick, low-force impulse at specific points.

Activator Methods Chiropractic Technique involves multiple steps. The chiropractor may use all of the steps, or may focus on only using the Activator instrument to adjust the spine.  A typical treatment will be done while the patient lies face down on the adjustment table. The treatment typically begins with the low back and progresses toward the head, targeting each vertebral segment individually.

Flexion-Distraction

Flexion-Distraction was developed as a gentle, non-force adjustment procedure to help the spine heal naturally. It is one of the most effective and well-researched techniques used by chiropractors.

The goal of Flexion-Distraction is to decompress the spine by applying gentle stretching to the lower back. The technique is performed on a special traction table which has an automatic function to effectively separate the different parts of the spine. The combination of this adjustment table and very gentle pressure utilizes flexion-distraction and decompression to increase the disc height between vertebrae, decompressing the spinal column and restore the spinal joints to their proper alignment.  The chiropractor can then apply gentle pressure to the affected areas as it moves through a more normal range of motion.

Positive benefits include: reduced pressure within the disc, reduced pressure on spinal nerves, improved ranges of motion in the spine and increase circulation.

Flexion-Distraction Technique has been successfully used to treat pain in the lower back, legs, neck, and arms.  It can also reduce the pain of herniated, slipped, or ruptured discs, sciatica, and other conditions. Because of its gentle non-force nature, is often used with patients who are recovering from spinal surgery or who are in rehabilitation. Not only is the process pain-free, many patients report that they find the procedure pleasant and relaxing. The technique has become recognized as an effective methodology for relieving pain, often without the need for spinal surgery.
